Brandon hated dances. There was always too much noise, too many people, too much dancing. He hated to dance.

The student parking lot was already jammed, but near some trash dumpsters he managed to find a place to leave his Mustang. It was not quite a parking area, but he didn't think he'd be in anybody's way on a Friday night.

He slammed his car door and walked across the blacktop with his hands in his pockets. He turned to walk down a wide cement aisle between tall trees. He walked toward the music. From this distance it sounded like fairy music, as if the trees themselves were playing it.

On the other side of the trees, a car pulled up and stopped. Two doors slammed and two people began to walk along the driveway that ran parallel with the promenade on which Brandon was walking.

The guy said, "This is a big deal, isn't it? Our first big school social event together." He sounded hopeful.

"It's just a dance," the girl said. She gave the impression that she'd shrugged.

Brandon had heard that David Silver and Donna Martin were indulging in the bonding rites that culminated in two people mysteriously becoming a couple. Brandon listened to them, not really eavesdropping, but just casually, because they were all walking in the same direction.

David said, "You mean it's not weird for you to be going out with me?"

"We're not going out."

"You mean we came here together, but we're not really together together."

"I didn't say that." Donna sounded nervous. Could it be she really liked the guy?

"You don't have to say anything," David said with disgust. His footsteps speeded up. "Come on. Let's get it over with."

"David, wait. I'm really proud to be here with the best dancer at West Beverly High."

"Really?" David sounded delighted. There came a sudden wet smacking sound.

"David!" Donna exclaimed.

"I'm sorry," David said, as flustered as she was. "I don't know why I kissed you."

"That's okay. Let's just go to the dance, okay?"

"Okay."

At the end of the promenade, Brandon met up with David and Donna. They looked a little embarrassed, which Brandon considered to be silly. He was only the first of hundreds of people who would see them together this evening. None of them would know that David and Donna were not together together.

"David! Donna! So, here we are."

"Good to see you, man," David said and shook hands with Brandon. David was wearing a wild Hawaiian shirt. Donna, as usual, was very stylish in her white micro-mini. Incongruously, she wore tennis shoes with her outfit. Of course, the people at the door wouldn't let anyone into the gym in street shoes.

They went in and for a moment stood at the door peering into the dark cavernous room. Kids were gyrating to "Jingle Bell Rock," which, as was traditional at dances, played much too loud. Christmas and Hanukkah decorations alternated across the walls.

"Lots of people," David said.

"I don't see Kelly," Donna said.

"There's Chuckie," said Brandon. He was surrounded by a group of admirers who were laughing at some witticism.
